Does the paint Atomic Blue makes your pulse faster? Does Pepper Red excite your senses? Does Anniversary Yellow make you want to stand up and sing out? How about Gypsy Green; does this cause you to choose to get on your bike and choose a lengthy cruise with the hopes of finding journey and romance at the other end?
These are merely among the many colors used on classic H-Ds that not only prevented the corrosion away your factory sheet metal, but also had been the stuff of dreams for a kid like me in the 50’s. Each day, in front of my high school, a ’62 H-D Servi-Car was left on the sidewalk; it was painted with Police Silver, an in-depth magnificent shade that got to symbolize authority and power to me all those years in the past. Brilliant Black Harley-Davidsons were the bike of outlaws in the 60’s, and it constantly felt so menacing and dark to me long ago. Hollywood Green became a pleasant and mild color that sensed just like the walls of the nearest hospital continually keep away from that shade of insanity, I say!
Paint was applied to the very first Harley, and the offered color scheme broadened over the decades to become a virtual spectrum of options. Color could define your look and offered the best way to modify your machine. It can make a statement of your personality and helps a person to stand above the rest.
1903 ushered in the first era of coated H-Ds in the form of Piano Black. Together with the nickel plating of the cylinder heads and varied components, the bike was an eye-catcher from The First Day. Recognizing the need for choice, these motorcycles followed with Carmine pin-striping on Renault Gray, an exquisite and refined combo, and the title Silent Gray Fellow was born. Silent because Harley prided themselves on being silent so as not to bother the horses and community of the time, gray mainly because that was its color, and fellow because Harley riders were gentlemen!
Years shift, and so do things like style of color. The twentieth century’s later young adults saw the use of olive green as being the typical color. People seemed to like this quite a bit. That lasted through the early ’30s, when individuals became unsettled once again for additional selections. Perhaps it had been the fact that Indian was now owned by the Du Pont family and because of its chemical company and paint products connection, you could get your motorbike coated from the manufacturing plant in almost any full color Du Pont provided. This became a game changer. Or maybe the depth of the depression powered the demand for full color and sparkle in days of anxiety and hardship. No matter what the solution, paint exploded into the motorbike scene and certainly, there was no going back.
Nineteen thirties found the creation of colors like Bronze Brown and Delphine Blue as well as Teak Red and Venetian Blue. These colors would certainly continue to define the era, then when motorcycles from this vintage show up at an AMCA meets, people pay attention.
Cruiser Green and Skyway Blue, Flight Red, and Azure Blue were released in the 1940s. Postwar riders were a lot more concerned about getting a bike than what coloration it was.
The 1950s has been a decade for colorations! Think about Metallic Congo Green, Persian Red, Rio Blue, and Tropical Green, with Birch White utilized for side panel positions and highlighting. So cool, so new, so fun to view!
Fast-forward to modern days when Harley Davidson takes paint much more serious than in the past. Besides the inventory colors several different custom made colors in minimal quantities are for sale to design your motorbike special. On my last visit of the York factory, I saw a rack of fuel tanks that had been turned down as a result of paint flaws, and I was blown away! The littlest of flaws rejected them from being added on a bike. This is definitely a testament to the level of quality the modern machines integrate.
